Alcatel-Lucent OmniVista Cirrus

Network Management as a Service

Statistics Overview

The Analytics Statistics feature enables you to collect and view statistics for network devices. To use the Statistics Feature, you set up your collection preferences (the information you want to collect), and enable statistics collection on the switch(es) you want to monitor. All managed switches are automatically included in a Default Statistics Collection Profile. This profile is used to set the statistics attributes (e.g., CPU Utilization, RxTx Utilization) that will be collected by OmniVista. Once you enable statistics collection on a switch(es), OmniVista automatically collects these statistics from all ports on those switch(es). You can then view statistics by creating View Profiles containing the switches and statistics attributes you want to view. You can also automatically configure and enable statistics collection any new switches added to the network. The Statistics application is configured using the following screens:

  • Statistics - Used to quickly view current statistics on a device(s), create a Collection Profile, and view statistics from an existing Chart View.
    • Collection - Used to create custom Collection Profiles to collect statistics from specific switches containing specific statistics variables
    • Chart Views - Used to create View Profiles to view statistics data.
  • Settings - Used to enable and configure automatic statistics collection from new switches added to the network.

Basic Statistics Workflow

To generate statistics data, you must first enable statistics collection on a switch(es) in the Managed Devices Table. By default, OmniVista collects data from all ports on a switch. Statistics data is then collected based on the statistics attributes configured in the Default Collection Profile. All managed switches are automatically included in the Default Collection Profile. The statistics attributes collected in the Default Profile can be configured as well as the polling interval and data retention period. You can also configure custom Collection Profiles to collect specific statistics attributes from specific switches. The basic steps for collecting and viewing statistics are:

1. View/Modify the Default Collection Profile

In the Analytics Menu, click on "Statistics", then click on "Collection" to bring up the Collection Screen. In the List of Collection Profiles, select the "Default Profile" and click on the Edit icon to view the attributes being collected. By default, all attributes are collected. You can change these defaults by selecting/unselecting attributes and clicking the Apply button. See the Collection online help for more information.

2. Enable Statistics on Network Switches

Go to the Managed Devices Screen (Network - Discovery - Managed Devices). Select the switch(es) on which you want to enable Statistics, click on the Features drop-down, and select Enable Statistics. OmniVista will begin collecting statistics from those switches based on the attributes set in the Default Collection Profile.

3. Create View Profiles

Return to the Analytics application. In the Analytics Menu, click on "Statistics", then click on "Chart Views" to bring up the Chart Views Screen. Click on the Add icon to create a View Profile containing the switches and attributes you want to display and click the Create button. See the Chart Views online help for more information.

4. View Statistics Data

After creating the View Profile you will be returned to the Chart Views Screen. Click on the name of the View Profile you just created to bring up the statistics display. By default, statistics data is displayed in graphical format. You can customize the way the data is displayed (e.g., line color/width, display timeframe); and you can also display the data in tabular format. See the Chart Views online help for more information.

Note: Once you create View Profiles, you can add them to the Performance Monitoring Dashboard for a quick view of network statistics. See the Dashboard online help for more information.

Automatic Statistics Workflow

Statistics are automatically enabled and configured automatically on any new switch you add to the network. To configure automatic statistics collection:

1. Set the Number of Switches

Go to the Settings Screen (Analytics - Settings). In the Collection Profile section at the top of the screen, you can set the number of new switches on which you want to automatically enable statistics collection in the Enable Statistics Automatically On field. If you select "All" (Default) all new devices will begin collecting the selected Statistics Attributes when they are added to the network. If you select "10" the first 10 devices added to the network will collect the selected attributes; if you select 20, the first 20 devices added to the network will collect the selected attributes, etc. That this will not affect any devices on your network that have already been configured statistics. Statistics configurations on those devices will not change.

When a new switch is added to the network, OmniVista will add the switch to the Default Collection Profile and begin collecting the attributes defined in the Default Profile. You can add these switches to a Collection Profile or just create View Profiles to view statistics data.

2. Create View Profiles

In the Analytics Menu, click on "Statistics", then click on "Chart Views" to bring up the Chart Views Screen. Click on the Add icon to create a View Profile containing the switches and attributes you want to display and click the Create button. See the Chart Views online help for more information.

3. View Statistics Data

After creating the View Profile you will be returned to theCollection Screen. Click on the name of the View Profile you just created to bring up the statistics display. By default, statistics data is displayed in graphical format. You can customize the way the data is displayed (e.g., line color/width, display timeframe); and you can also display the data in tabular format. See the Chart Views online help for more information.
